Well, my lj has been pretty much defunct for the best part of this yr, but seeing as a whole lot seems to be happening I thought I might chance an update. So...

I move out on the weekend. Can you believe, finally? All my life is packed up in boxes and i've been suprisingly unsentimental about the whole thing. I guess it has something to do with me only moving about a 10 min drive away so it's not like it's a huge upheaval or anything. Going Ikea shopping this arvo, which should be an adventure...

Another happening worth mentioning is my new boy. He's a philosophy buddy of mine who came along to a gig at the sandringham in which Tim (The Reservations/Sliced Bread/bizza played some of his fine songs. I got all brave and said "I like ya" and he said "I like ya too"... so yeah! We spent all conception day together, getting rained on, witty t-shirt spotting and enjoying the sounds of switchkicker and Bagster. Smile.

I think I might have gotten one of the very last tickets to Homebake and I can't begin to describe how excited I am about Tim and Neil Finn playing!!! I must say though, I'm not all that impressed that they've gone and made an all-girl cover cd of their songs without me. I would have expected at least a phone call or something :p

Anyway, I'm off to think of my "claim to fame" in order to win those Franz Ferdi in NY tix off Jay and the Dr!

til text time...
xoxo

Mess Hall was fun. Not really a band I would have gone out of my way to see normally, but they were pretty impressive for just a guitar and drums.

Yesterday I went with Becca for dinner ar Mama Chu's, which is always delicious and then we took pictures around the city with the old polaroid camera she found at Rozelle markets, and i've decided that when I go down to Melbourne to visit her i'm going to take all my holiday snaps on polaroid film, just for kicks.

Next week is going to be lotsa fun. On Weds night I am supposed to be going to Spectrum to see a band called Freeway who apparently have a guitarist who plays like Hendrix, according to my new friend Jem. Then on Friday it will be Gerling at the Annadale. Yay Gerling!

My friend from work burnt me a copy of the runaway found by The Veils and I have to say, it is one hell of a fantastic album. It's a little bit radiohead, grandaddy, jeff buckley and a whole lot of other influences - all terrific! I can't believe I hadn't heard any of their stuff before.

I was browsing around the co-op bookshop on Harris st yesterday, waiting for Lizzy to come and meet me for lunch and I almost bought "The Communist Manifesto". I mean, what sort of an arts student would I be if i never read it? But I didn't have my co-op card on me and I thought, what sort of an arts student would I be if I chose to forego my discount just so that I could immediately gratify my desire to have this book. So I didn't get it, but I think I will.

I found The Laptop EP by MC Lars at redeye though and that I just had to have! It's so nerdy, yet so cool, white-boy punk-rap, beastie-boys lovechild. I think it's also the first proper hip-hop album I have actually bought myself! Crazy to think that!

Well, I handed in my last assignment on monday and tomorrow I'm going to see The Mess Hall @ the gaelic with some work people, which should be fun, apart from the fact that I then have to be at the airport at 7am on Sat morning in order to see Lianne off to NZ for the next 6 months. I'm so not gonna cry. 6 months is nothing... it'll pass in a flash.

Meanwhile, my No. 1 Melbourne girl Becca is up in Sydney, so hopefully I'll be able to take my mind off being abandoned by hanging out with her.

Eurovision, Eurovision, Eurovision... what can I say?

Poland put on a truly dismal performance and didn't make it through to the final and have given me plenty of ammo to use against "The Polish Contingent" otherwise known as Jacob, J9 and their league of Polish friends. As my sisters friend Anja the Croatian so eloquently said in an sms during their performance, "Just be glad your not fucking Polish. Fucking freaks."

Hungary were in the final for the 1st time in like, forever and while the song was pretty much classic eurovision (ie. awful), the folk dancing was really quite impressive. We got into the top 14, which means we get automatic entry for next year, so I'm holding high hopes for the future.

Moldova should have won it, I say! It was just so god damn weird that it was really quite unsettling in a postmodern kind of way. And they has a drum playing granny! Tell me, what is cooler than a drum playing granny???

Managed to catch Darren Hanlon, Sodastream and Jens Lekman (in keeping with the eurotrash theme) on the weekend, which was great. Jens lekman's charming brand of anecdotal pop, is remarkably similar to Darrens, though slightly more Swedish and ukulele-based. Daz was thoroughly adoptable and musically wonderful as always and I was almost tempted to receive communion yesterday, just so that I could say "Can I have mine with butter please?" after a very cute story that he told about is days as an alter boy.

Had quite a nice little long weekend, even if it was interdispersed with work on this stupid essay on Kantian aesthetics which is late late late and still nowhere near completion.

Went into the city for dinner and to see Downfall with Liz on Sat night. It was a really powerful & affecting movie... I was still thinking about it when I woke up the next morning. Now i'm reading Stasiland by Anna Funder, which is all about the operations of the German secret police between the end of WWII and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's quite fascinating and disturbing how Orwellian it all was and especially to think that it was still happening during my lifetime. Still getting annoyed at my sister for speaking to me in German though. I've nicknamed her Cornelia after that poor woman who was mistakenly put into detention.

Sunday I went to Cara and Jacobs housewarming at their new place in dee why, which was nice. It's really motivated me to move out now and hopefully I should be able to do it at the end of this year.

Yay.

I have no more classes for today and I'm waiting for my golf lesson to start at 4:30. Fun fun. Then I have to go home and pack my bag and it's off to Coff's Harbour for the long weekend.

Goodness was seeing the Black Keys at the Metro with Liz and Jakey (who are making me cry now because I'm not doing the Ben Folds/Bright Eyes double header weekend with them). Tres, Tres awesome! The Black Keys have to be one of the best live bands in ever!
Hey! So i'm still alive! it's kinda hard to know where to start...... these last few weeks have been CA-RAZY!

I think were i left off might have been around the time that I went a-visiting to see Tim (of.... wait for it.... bizza fame)in order to play him a couple of my songs and to hear him play a couple of his songs. He was able to give me some really wise advice and inspiration and I think my songwriting will be all the better for it (once I actually get the chance to do some more work).

And Tim, well he should really think about getting out an album or three already. He has some top quality songs with great lyrics and bop-a-bility and it was delightful to hear him play!

As for my Rufus Wainwright acceptance scheme.......... well it appears to be working : )

Forward...... My 21st Birthday party!!!

Was lovely, fun, only mildy embarassing (read: drunken aunty reciting impromptu poetry in my honour). Felt very warm and fuzzy and loved and stuff. Lotsa cool pressies including a digital camera with which I'm sure to be bombarding my journal with images as soon as I can be bothered to load all the software onto my computer.

Forward...... 1st day back at uni/actual birthday/kareoke

Forward...... BRYAN ADAMS @ the ent cent with special guest Shannon Noll.

Noll was painful. He actually said "That's what ooiim tawkin' about". Thank god we only got there to here the last few songs of his set. Painful.

Bryan Adams on the other hand... ROCK FREAKIN GOD. I was so excited about this gig and was expecting to be disapointed, but good ol' Adams is such a solid performer and his songs have so much nostalgic value.... twas a great night!

Well I think that's enough for one entry... you'll have to sit tight and wait til next time to hear about Lianne's Birthday Party Scandal!!!!!!!!!!

Well discovered bizza!!!

* The Shins @ The Metro. Rollicking good night! The boys from Dappled are well and truly back to their best. Daves new guitar was nuts. Practically Sci-fi! The Shins were tray fantastic, but I do suspect there are better performances in them. Lotsa kool kids in the audience like bizza, Amy & Nelson and even Murray from The Wiggles, as spotted by Liz!!!

* Kareoke on Tuesday night. Lianne and I did Crocodile Rock and totally aced it. Be afraid. We got the x-factor.

* Thursday I went to the city and met up with a boy that I met at Melanie's party. He's called Mark and he makes films and he's very nice. We had Italian for lunch, went to that big Japanese bookstore & JB Hi-fi and then went for a walk in the Botanic Gardens and a little peek around at the MCA.

* The 2nd Annual Girly Weekender, held before Lianne heads back up to Coffs Harbour for uni. Saturday we went to the races at Randwick. Won money, lost money and learnt never to trust Jarbs and her form guide!

Sat night we invented a new cocktail, named The Cameltoe (don't ask). Ingredients: Baileys, frangelico & Malibu with lashings of caramel sauce and topped with Milo. Bbbrrrrr!

Sunday we went to the ING Cup match @ the SCG, NSW vs VIC. There was a time when Lianne, Jarbs and I would spend nearly every weekend at the SCG, listening to 12th Man cds and playing cricket groupies. Thankfully, we've out-grown that phase (almost) and were able to go along and enjoy the game for its own merits. We all have new nicknames though. I'm Kato, Lianne is Hads, Jarbara Bones is Clarkey, Leah is Thorno (she always gets stuck with the red-heads) and Lee is Lee Lee, or Binger. Named after our future husbands of course.

* Rufus Wainwright @ The Basement on Monday. Brilliant, brilliant! Rufus is such a terrific, charming performer and the intimate setting was just lovely. When he played his version of "hallalujah" I had tears in my eyes. It was just gorgeous. I don't think any of his recordings have been able to quite capture just how marvelous his voice is. The show left me glad all over!

Oh, sorry, am i gushing?

Last Friday saw Expatriate, The Winters and The Glass Age @ the Hopetoun, and also the good bizza. All bands were good - a very satisfactory night all round, and I particularly liked Expatriate, who are 2 parts Talking Heads to one part Interpol... and let's face it, Interpol are at least 1/3 Talking Heads themselves.

I enjoyed them so much that I might even go to see them again this Fri playing @ Spectrum with The Presets (who i've been hanging out to see a 2nd time for ages).

and then...

Monday night is Shins night!!!

Just finished reading Trilby by George Du Maurier, which I quite enjoyed, even though about a 1/4 of it was in French. Damn, where's Rhy's when you need him. Oh, in France, ok. Well, what good is my personal French translator to me when his in France!

Wha' eva.

Saw Alfie. Loved Alfie. I want that Chet Baker, Let's Get Lost poster that they kept showing in the background. So the film had the most appallingly cliched storyline and 1960's moralising, but hey - that's the time the original film came from. And well... Jude Law!!!

3 ((secret)) fantasies - a list:

1) Jude Law. In my bed. Tonight.

2) Chet Baker. In my bed. 1954.

3) A Rufus Wainright album sung entirely in French.

Speaking of Rufus Wainwright, I have a date with him @ the Basement on Valentines Day. J'adore Rufus.

Went to my second oldest friend in the whole world, Melanie's 21st birthday party on Saturday, which was quite a charming affair. It was so strange to see photo's of when we were little, at primary school, girl guides 'n stuff. My parents have started badgering me about arrangements for my own 21st. Don't wanna think about it.

This week has been ever so leisurely. Saw a couple of movies. I Heart Huckabees for one. (Sorry I don't know how to conjure up that little HEART symbol like all the rest of you.) Still trying to figure out if it's all little joins, or all little cracks. All I hope is that Jude Law is hiding somewhere under my blanket :P

Also saw Spongebob Squarepants which is just one big postmodern joyride through cartoon heaven. It wouldn't suprise me in the least if someone told me that The Flaming Lips had written the entire film script as well as that song on the soundtrack.

Been good. Exercising lots. Eating lightly. Reading muchly. Drinking not muchly. Wrote a song or two. Had songs reviewed as "boring" by mean sister. I think i'm gonna stop asking her. I liked those songs.

Next weekend will be spent at Gerroa on the south coast at Rhys's family holiday house before he sets off to France for the year. Should be good times. I need to make him a mix cd before he leaves. Must include The Dresden Dolls coin-operated boy and something by The Presets. What else I don't know... trashy, give me something trashy.

Hi folks, hope the new year has been good to you all so far!

The little NYE soiree at J9's is probably best not gone into... my predictions for out-of-handedness turned out to be even worse than I had imagined. But I managed to get home alive with only a few mysterious bruises and a vague recollection of walking over to the gladesville bridge and getting the most awesome view of the fireworks ever.

So in the time between then and now I've seen The Incredibles and Meet the Fockers, been stereo shopping with my sister and discovered the joys of antique shopping with Leah. You can find the best jewellery in those places!

I only have one resolution this year and that is to run in the City to Surf.

So yeah.

Oh, and before the whole NYE affair we went to the ol' Hoey for the FBI fund-raiser were we saw tim of bizza and The Reservations noteriety rockin' the keyboards and such, as well as The Devoted Few, who were excellent and a couple of other bands who were... thought provoking....

Luff.

Holy Guacamole! New Bart Davenport mp3s and boy oh boy are they goodies! He has a new album out in February and I think i'm gonna have to try and order it, and some of his older stuff in. Unless i'm lucky and gets distro in Australia, and then comes on tour and... oh...oh...

Well, I went on a bit of a shopping expedition yesterday to keep myself awake so that I could sleep at night and try and kick this little bout of insomnia I've been having lately. It proved to be a very fruitful excursion indeed, because i actually found... I ACTUALLY FOUND!!! the original A Clockwork Orange soundtrack. I have been looking for that everywhere all year long. My life is, like semi-complete! I slept well too.

I also bought Pink Moon by Nick Drake and Want One by Rufus Wainwright. He is the hottiest hottie. He dedicated the album to himself. That is so adorable. I wanted to find the album that has Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk but I could no find it :( Also, they already had his new album at HMV, but it is still on import and tres expensive. Oh well welly well.

Tonight will be the Fbi radio fundraisery gig with The Devoted Few and The Reservations among others. Should be good.

The prospect of new years frightens me somewhat. Crazy stuff is gonna happen @ this party. Maybe good crazy, but maybe not.

Erch. Sleep is not happening. Tummy not pleased. Chocolate crackles are the enemy of happy tummies. Chocolate crackles are the enemy of sleep. Chocolate crackles are a key player in the triangle of tummy terror. We must fight the chocolate crackle with Ferrero Rocher.

So yes... I hope you have been having the merriest of merry christmases, chrismukkahs etc!

Festivites began with Camels by Candlelight where I had the pleasure of meeting bizza the person and witnessing the most adorable thing anyone over the age of 5 has ever done in Dappled Cities Dave singing Have yourself a merry little christmas. Good times.

Obligatory family gatherings today, marred only by the appearance of the ever-evil chocolate crackle.

Tomorrow will be lunch with my Dads side, which will mean even greater volumes of delicious food which I will be powerless to refuse.
I did something very rascally last night and opened up the garden state soundtrack I got my sister for christmas and had a listen. I don't think i'm going to be able to part with it. Too many beautiful comfort songs -and the Iron & Wine version of such great heights... well, let's just say I have a brand new obsession.

Went into newtown, got tix to Camels by Candelight @ The Hoey for tommorrow night (excited air-punching), picked up a copy of our endless numbered days as well as Lior's autumn flow. Suspect I maybe just might be getting The Go Team under the christmas tree, because my sister really untactfully discouraged me from buying that too. Maybe she's been secretly listening to it in the middle of the night and doesn't want ot give it to me either. Anyways, Lior after only 2 listens is so, so breathtakingly magnificent. Kinda takes up where Major disappointingly left off after the inner western EP. His vocals and songwriting just soar.
